Spurs put up stellar defensive display to deny SSU

Cape Town Spurs were solid defensively as they held a frustrated attacking SuperSport United side to a 0-0 draw in the DStv Premiership at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening.

Right off the bat, SuperSport United were giving Cape Town Spurs trouble.

Shandre Campbell in particular was probing to open the scoring. First off, he cut into the box with a strong shot but Spurs defended his advances well.

Gadiel Kamagi was shown red in the 16th minute following a sliding tackle on Campbell when he was the last man and through on goal.

A free kick was awarded to SuperSport, but Lyle Lakay’s shot was well saved by Spurs keeper Neil Boshoff.

Later on, Katlego Maphathe got the chance to open the scoring as well on the overlap but Ricardo Goss was alert and saved the effort.

The first half was evenly balanced despite the Urban Warriors being a man down and both teams ended it all square with no goals.

The second half was similar, as Bradley Grobler’s effort was denied and Campbell continued to cause problems.

Matsantsantsa turned up the heat in the last 20 minutes as they kept pushing to find the breakthrough.

Ashley Cupido was also close, with an on target free kick outside the box but Goss saved the day once again.

SuperSport gave it their all and even almost got the goal, but a clearance off the line ensured that the spoils were shared in Polokwane.

The result sees Cape Town Spurs pick up one more point, although they remain bottom of the log, and it was a chance missed for SuperSport United as they could not find the end product on home soil.
